On November 18th, 2016, Fenway Libraries Online hosted the inaugural event for the Collection Management Community of Interest: Broadly Narrow - The Challenges of Selecting: from Specialized Libraries to Statewide Sharing.  The event began with a presentation on collecting for specialized libraries, led by Joanne Doucette the Associate Professor and Associate Director of the Henrietta DeBenedictis Library, at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

The event also featured a panel discussion with members of the All-FLO Collection Development Committee (ACDC).  The panel discussed the detailed process of developing the academic content profile for Ebook Library (EBL) available through the Commonwealth eBook Collections (CeC).  ACDC went on to discuss the challenges of working with vendor ebook packages and their ideas for the future of managing ebook collections.

Attendees asked great questions and promoted an insightful discussion.  Thank you to our presenters and panelists for conducting an excellent event!

  • Taking Stock: Best Practices for Designing Library Learning Space Today

     Allison Head

Earlier this month, Fenway Libraries Online (FLO) and the Fenway Libraries Consortium (FLC) hosted the event, Taking Stock: Best Practices for Designing Library Learning Space Today.  The keynote speaker of the event was Allison Head, Executive Director and Lead Researcher at Project Information Literacy (PIL).

Head spoke about the research PIL has conducted regarding building renovations at academic libraries.  The research encapsulated all parts of the renovation process, from how librarians and architects work together in planning stages, to the goals and changes librarians and administrators wanted to see in the physical space, to how patrons used the spaces after the renovations.  The full report on this project is still to be released.

  • 2016 FLO Conference

Submitted by Alexandra on September 7, 2016

This summer, Fenway Libraries Online (FLO) presented its third annual staff conference.  The event, titled, “Libraries and Librarians in Transition,” was graciously hosted by the New England College of Optometry.  Staff from FLO institutions and the wider community attended the presentation and reception, including representatives from Colleges of the Fenway, Simmons College, and the Boston Public Library.

During the conference, Walter Stine, Executive Director of FLO, Kevin Kidd, Library Director at the Douglas D. Schumann Library & Learning Commons at the Wentworth Institute of Technology, and Deborah Pepper, Senior Director of Operations and Collaborative Services at the Colleges of the Fenway discussed the array of changes that took place this year.  Changes included a multitude of new staff members, improved technology support and resources, and several physical library renovations.

The keynote speaker for the conference was John Palfrey, Head of the School at Phillips Academy, Andover.  Palfrey spoke about the importance of libraries, even in the internet age, and even with all of the changes in staffing, technology, and brick-and-mortar spaces.

The event was a well-attended success, and a welcome celebration after a busy year.
