  • New Member Services Librarian at FLO

Submitted by Alexandra on February 12, 2015

With her first week off to a snowy start, Alexandra Winzeler has begun work as the new Member Services Librarian at Fenway Libraries Online, taking over the position from Adam Shire.  Alexandra first spent time in the Fenway area as a student at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts where she received her BFA. Since then, she completed her Master's degree in Library and Information Science at Simmons College and went on to work at institutions such as Harvard University and the Boston Athenaeum.  Alexandra is excited to apply her library studies in supporting the Fenway community where she got her start.

FLO Community: it’s been just over a month since our FLO staff conference on June 5 at Emmanuel College and a lot has happened since then. First, however, a big thank you to everyone who attended the conference! We got a lot of good input from everyone for our strategic planning process and I’ve heard a many positive comments about the day.  We hope to do similar conferences in the future, perhaps in a half-day format. (If you want to review any of the presentations from the conference, you will find them here:http://www.flo.org/news/reboot-envisioning-flo-through-2020.) In the meantime, I wanted to update everyone about current activities:

EBL Ebooks – it’s no longer a trial! We will be continuing with EBL ebooks for the full academic year ahead. Also, we are planning to participate in the statewide ebook project being run by the Massachusetts Library System (MLS). More details about this as they become available.

Commonwealth Catalog – work is underway to go live with the new, statewide virtual catalog (ComCat) in time for the fall semester. Starting around August 1, we will do a soft launch so that staff can try out the new system before we open it up to students and faculty. Look forward to an announcement later this month or in early August.

Digital Repositories – in the coming year, we will be testing one or more digital repositories including Islandora and Avalon. We will also be sponsoring programs on archives management to give staff a common framework and language to move forward with digital archives.

CORAL – at their June meeting, the Board of Directors approved releasing the RFP to upgrade CORAL with a Cost History feature. We anticipate that the RFP will go out next week with work to be completed in two to three months. Also, several library staffers are finishing a Case Study about CORAL that will be published by LYRASIS later this summer.

Evergreen Review – also at the June meeting, the Board of Directors approved setting up a small working group in FLO to promote academic functionality in Evergreen. We anticipate working with other interested organizations to develop an academic interest group – “Academics for Evergreen” – within the larger Evergreen community. With the coordinated effort of a larger group, we hope to turn Evergreen into an acceptable ILS for FLO in a few years.

Voyager Upgrade – we’ll be upgrading Voyager on Tuesday, July 29, with additional configuration on Wednesday, July 30. More details will be sent out soon about the upgrade.

Strategic Planning and Vision Statement – the Long-Range Planning Committee (a Board committee) will meet in July to start discussion about our next strategic plan covering fiscal years 2016-2020. The committee will also discuss a vision statement for FLO based on the proposals at the conference. Stay tuned for further developments.

And finally, don’t forget the FLO bike ride/walk/lunch on Saturday, August 2, and the FLO picnic on Thursday, August 14. See http://www.flo.org/ride for details and sign up for the bike ride. We’ll send out information about the picnic in early August. It can’t be all about work!

  • Catching up. (I hope to have real titles from now on)

We have an Evergreen meeting tomorrow Thursday, May 1, 2014, with folks from MassLNC. MassLNC, The Massachusetts Library Network Cooporative, is a group of library networks in Massachusetts who collaborate around the implementation and development of Evergreen. I'll try to do a write up of what we learn from them, so stay tuned for that.

We are also preparing for our June 5th conference/event/get together at Emmanuel College to kick-off the planning process for the next 5-year strategic plan. Eileen AbelsDean of Simmons GSLIS, will deliver the keynote address.

On the technical side of things we are working on some new ways to present information about MARC record loads for e-resources. I think we'll try to demo this at the upcoming QC meeting.
